How Does a Pneumatic Butterfly Valve Open and Close?
Pneumatic butterfly valves are widely used for automatic ON/OFF control in industrial piping systems. Instead of manual operation, compressed air drives the actuator to rotate the butterfly valve disc, allowing the valve to open or close quickly and reliably.

一、How Does a Pneumatic Butterfly Valve Work?
A pneumatic butterfly valve combines a butterfly valve with a pneumatic actuator. The actuator converts compressed air into rotary motion, which turns the valve stem and disc.
1.1 Valve Opening
When compressed air enters the actuator, it generates torque and rotates the valve stem. The disc turns approximately 90° toward the open position.
When the disc is parallel to the flow direction, the valve is fully open and the medium can pass through the pipeline.
1.2 Valve Closing
To close the valve, the actuator rotates the stem in the opposite direction. The disc moves perpendicular to the flow direction, shutting off the pipeline.
Because only a quarter-turn is required, pneumatic butterfly valves provide fast ON/OFF operation and are well suited for automated systems.
二、Single-Acting vs. Double-Acting Actuators
The actuator determines how the butterfly valve opens and closes.
2.1 Double-Acting Actuator
A double-acting actuator uses compressed air for both opening and closing. It is commonly used where a stable air supply is available and controlled operation in both directions is required.
2.2 Single-Acting Actuator
A single-acting, or spring-return, actuator uses compressed air in one direction and spring force in the other.
If the air supply is lost, the spring automatically returns the valve to its preset position, such as fail-open or fail-close.
三、How Is a Pneumatic Butterfly Valve Automated?
A pneumatic butterfly valve can be equipped with accessories for remote and automatic operation.
3.1 Solenoid Valve
The solenoid valve controls the compressed air supplied to the actuator. When it receives an electrical signal from a PLC or other control system, it changes the airflow direction to operate the butterfly valve.
3.2 Limit Switch
A limit switch provides open and closed position feedback. This allows the control system or operator to confirm the actual valve position.
3.3 Air Filter Regulator
An air filter regulator helps provide clean compressed air at a suitable pressure, improving the reliability and service life of pneumatic components.
四、 Why Choose a Pneumatic Butterfly Valve?
Pneumatic butterfly valves are a practical choice for applications requiring fast operation, remote control, frequent cycling, and automation.
They are commonly used in water treatment, HVAC, chemical processing, food and beverage systems, and general industrial pipelines.
The valve can also be configured with different body materials, seat materials, pneumatic actuators, solenoid valves, limit switches, and other accessories according to the application.
